Management of Biodiversity Fund
The Austrian Biodiversity Fund is a national initiative led by the Ministry of Climate Protection to enhance biodiversity and restore natural habitats across Austria. With a total funding volume of €80 million, the fund provides financial support to a wide range of stakeholders, including individuals, organizations, businesses, municipalities, and other legal entities, covering up to 100% of eligible costs for approved projects.
Objectives and Priorities
The fund is aligned with Austria’s national biodiversity strategy and aims to contribute to key conservation goals, including:
- Protecting and Expanding Natural Habitats: Establishing and managing newly protected and strictly protected areas, ensuring the legal safeguarding of 30% of Austria’s land area, with a significant portion under strict protection.
- Restoring and Improving Ecosystems: Implementing restoration projects to rehabilitate degraded habitats, enhance ecological functions, and strengthen habitat connectivity through corridors linking protected areas.
- Species Conservation and Biodiversity Monitoring: Supporting targeted efforts to preserve endangered species, improve their population status, and enhance knowledge about biodiversity through nationwide monitoring programs.
Implementation and Funding Criteria
Projects are selected based on their contribution to biodiversity protection and restoration, focusing on efficiency, sustainability, and effectiveness. The funding ensures that resources are utilized optimally, maximizing their impact on species conservation, habitat quality improvement, and overall ecosystem health.
By fostering collaboration between public and private sectors, the Austrian Biodiversity Fund plays a crucial role in addressing biodiversity loss, protecting Austria’s unique flora and fauna, and creating a sustainable future for nature and communities alike.
